Every year the international consulting agency Mercer conducts a study evaluating the quality of life in the largest cities of the world. And for ten years it has been consistently headed by Vienna, as the most comfortable city to live in. The city (and the whole of Austria, too) is famous for its stable political, economic and social environment, extensive infrastructure, educational institutions, high level of medical care, as well as a variety of cultural life. It is also worth noting that Austria ranks 8th in the world Environmental Efficiency Index, 3rd in terms of wages and has a non-aligned military status, which means protection from participation in international conflicts. Therefore, there are more and more people who want to get a residence permit in this country every year.
Visa regime
Austria is a member of the Schengen Agreement, according to which a Schengen visa is required to enter the country. It comes in three types:
- A – issued to foreigners whose purpose of visit is transit to other countries through the international airports of Austria,
- With (short-term stay up to 90 days) - issued to persons whose purpose of visit is tourism, transit, visiting relatives or friends, business trips, it gives the right to visit the countries of the Schengen area,
- D (national visa) - valid only on the territory of Austria and gives the right to stay in the country for 3 to 6 months without a temporary residence permit or residence permit. This visa entitles you to travel to the Schengen countries for up to 90 days during the validity period of the national visa.
Advantages of a residence permit
Holders of an Austrian residence permit have the right to free movement in the EU countries, and after continuous residence for ten years, they can obtain local citizenship. At the same time, if there are other countries where having a residence permit is not always essential for a full immersion in local life, then Austria is the very country where it is necessary to first obtain a residence permit and only then you can start solving important issues, for example, without a residence permit, a foreigner will not be able to purchase local real estate.
Grounds for obtaining a residence permit
Austria offers many options for obtaining a residence permit for foreigners. The main thing for the registration of any motive from them is the presence of good reasons for permanent residence in the country, documented.
Residence permit for family reunification
The classic option of obtaining a residence permit is when one family member has citizenship or residence in Austria, then his close relatives will also be able to issue it (spouses, parents and children). To obtain this type of residence permit, you need to confirm the relationship with an apostilled marriage or birth certificate.
Academic residence permit
It is considered one of the simplest options for obtaining a residence permit in Austria. A foreigner must enroll in an Austrian university or be enrolled in a local school. If we are talking about secondary educational institutions, then a minor cannot live alone, so he can only move with his parents or he will have to look for a guardian among residents or citizens of Austria). Only students of full programs can apply for a residence permit, so studying for an exchange during one semester does not give such an opportunity. After successfully graduating from an educational institution, after graduation, you can stay in the country to find a job.
To apply for a residence permit, you will need an invitation from the university, and since higher education in Austria is paid, you also need a receipt for payment. If a student has received a grant or additional funding, it must be documented. In the case of a school residence permit, you will need an invitation from an Austrian school in Austria and the presence of a residence permit from parents or guardians. In the case of submitting documents together with parents, it is not necessary to confirm this separately. If tuition is paid, you will need a receipt and a letter from the school about accepting payment.
It is important to know that a student residence permit does not give the right to work - for this you need to get a separate permit from the Austrian Labor Exchange (AMS). And even if this condition is met, foreign students are allowed to work only 20 hours a week.
Red-white-red card for graduates of Austrian universities
As you know, graduates of Austrian universities have the right to receive a red-white-red card and stay in the country for another year to find a job, while it is very convenient that it is not necessary to use this opportunity immediately after graduation. For example, if for some reason you had to return home after studying in Austria, then you can still apply for a residence permit. The main documents confirming such a motive will be a diploma and a certificate confirming knowledge of the German language.
Residence permit for the self-employed
A suitable option for foreign freelancers and individual entrepreneurs, it is also suitable for those who have found remote vacancies and signed a contract with the customer for a period of at least 6 months.

This version of the residence permit, the name of which reflects the colors of the national flag of the country, is a point program of immigration for qualified professionals, where ideally you can score 100 points if the applicant has good indicators in such parameters as age, education, work experience, knowledge of German, etc. To obtain such a residence permit, you need at least 70 points, if it succeeds, then a foreigner does not need to look for a job in advance before applying for a residence permit. You can calculate the points yourself on the website of the Austrian representative office.
Red-white-red card for scarce specialists
Adjacent to the previous version of the residence permit, only here we are talking about specific working professions that are not enough in Austria - turners, power engineers, electricians, roofers, pavers and carpenters. To get this type of residence permit, you need to score 55 points out of 100. In addition, there is a regional list of scarce personnel, which may change every year: for example, in 2021 there are not enough accountants in Salzburg and Upper Austria. The disadvantage of this program is the limitation of the number of issued residence permits, only for 300 foreigners.
Red-white-red card «plus»
This type of residence permit can be obtained by holders of an ordinary red-white-red card or a blue EU card who have already lived in Austria for two years and of them have been employed for 21 months, as well as scientists and researchers who have lived on a temporary residence permit for 2 years, and relatives of holders of a red-white-red or blue card. Residence permit for volunteers
For its registration, it is necessary to have a contract with a volunteer organization, where all aspects of the work, its duration, the possibility of providing housing, the need to confirm qualifications and other details must be spelled out. Such a residence permit does not imply immigration and is not extended.
Refugee residence permit
Obtaining refugee status is not an easy way, there must be a proven good reason, in addition, the process of issuing this type of residence permit is regulated in accordance with the Geneva Convention on the Status of Refugees. For the first time, this status is granted for one year, after which it is extended for two more. During this time, you can start studying or get a work permit and get a job.
