History

If you plunge into history, you can find out that the Croatian islands were inhabited during the time of Ancient Greece. With every century, the number of people living on them grew, reaching a maximum in the 1920s. - then this figure was over 170,000 inhabitants. But then the population declined, reaching the level of the mid-19th century by 1980. But due to the active development of the tourism sector on the islands of Croatia, already in the 90s. the population began to grow again, which continues today. The coronavirus pandemic has drawn additional attention to them - in conditions of self-isolation, living on an island in the southern part of Europe is especially comfortable, so local real estate has become very popular not only among foreign buyers, but also among the Croatian population. It is also worth noting that the largest and most popular islands have regular ferry connections not only with the cities of Croatia, but also with Italy.

Krk and Cres are the largest islands (which are adjacent to each other in the northern part of the coast) not only in Croatia, but throughout the Adriatic Sea, each measuring 405 sq. Km. But if Krk (one of the main centers of Croatian culture) is home to about 20,000 people, then on Cres - only a few thousand. Krk is now connected to the mainland by a bridge built in 1980. Despite the fact that the island of Korcula by its size (276 sq. This is the pearl of the southern part of the country, known primarily for the fact that, according to local tradition, the famous traveler Marco Polo was born here in 1254. In 1298, a naval battle took place near the island between the fleets of Genoa and Venice, which ended in victory for the Genoese. It is assumed that Marco Polo took part in this battle on the side of the Venetians, then was taken prisoner and taken to Genoa, where in prison he dictated a book about his travels.

Like most other Croatian islands, Korcula was ruled by the Venetians for a long time, which can still be seen in the old town of Korcula, thanks to the well-preserved characteristic architecture of the medieval Dalmatian town with narrow streets and old buildings. Since then, the Cathedral of St. Mark, palaces, the Franciscan monastery and several temples have been preserved here.
