The land of the kiwi people is how they call New Zealanders, promising but still little-known investors in the market. However, for those wishing to leave on the edge of the earth this country can be a real boon, because the world is hard to find a more relaxed pace and style of life than what is typical for New Zealand.
New Zealand has every chance to become one of the pillars of the real estate market, such as Canada, the USA and Australia, due to the absence of land taxes, state duties and income tax on the sale of property. Add the active migration of the local population and the growing appetites of the tourism industry. All this attracts investors, promising a good profit in the future. However, their ardor was cooled by the recent increase in mortgage interest rates. According to forecasts of the New Zealand Reserve Bank, in 2008 real estate will grow in price by an average of 11%, with the peak of investor activity in the second quarter.
"Despite the fact that New Zealand prices often bite," notes James Wittering of Property New Zealand, "large cities and resort regions like the lake district of Otago and the city of Christchurch in the Canterbury area abound in affordable housing. Experts promise success to large buyers in small towns, such as Kaverau and Wairoa on the North Island, where investment real estate provides high profits from renting it out and capital gains above average."

Canterbury Tales
Stretching from the eastern, Pacific coast of the South Island to the ragged Southern Alps, Canterbury Land is an ideal option for those who are used to investing in lifestyle. This is a pastoral combined with the best ski resorts in New Zealand and bustling Christchurch – a city of gardens and parks that occupy 11% of the city's land. In its central part, you can find both cozy cottages, villas of the XIX century and large mansions, as well as ultra-modern apartments in apartment buildings with round-the-clock security and concierge, rented "turnkey".
Among theaters, art galleries and restaurants, where the heart of Christchurch beats, Grenadier Real Estate offers a luxurious, renovated and fully furnished studio for $140,000. Among its advantages are a spacious, open–plan living room, an equipped kitchen and an underground parking lot with a reserved space. The infrastructure of the residential complex includes a fitness club, a day spa, a restaurant and a cocktail bar.
Another ideal investment purchase option for renting out is The Oaks residential complex on central Cashel Street. It is characterized by a small, fully equipped apartment with one bedroom and a bathroom. The offer can be found in the catalogs of Brazier Property Investments, with prices starting from $ 150,000.
After driving 80 km south-east from Christchurch through the Banks Peninsula, the traveler finds himself in the ancient "town-in-a-snuffbox" Akaroa. In the openwork carving of endless bays, there is a luxurious village of cottages made of stone and mast timber Akaroa Cottages – a limited offer from Winslow Properties for families with an "active lifestyle". There are options with one, two and three bedrooms, a Tyrolean-style kitchen, a tiled bathroom and an outdoor terrace. Prices start from $150,000.
The attention of medium–sized investors is offered the lands of North Canterbury - an example of landscape eclecticism, where farms, distilleries, ski resorts, beaches and lands shrouded in the mystery of bygone times are combined. Here is the growing wine-growing town of Huaypara, and the resort of Hanmer Springs, famous for thermal springs, and the coastal towns of Gore Bay and Montanau. NCEL offers plots with a variety of summer houses from $160,000 in the town of Waikaku in North Canterbury, 25 min. driving from Christchurch.
Hanmer Springs is a favorite place for skiers and snowboarders, located in the Hurunui River area, 90 minutes away. drive from Christchurch. It opens the way to Tennyson Lake and Nelson Lakes National Park, popular among bikers and hikers. Fresh air, Alpine climate and proximity of hot springs turn this town into a real resort area. A tempting offer from Ray White Real Estate is several turnkey apartments with a garden plot in the village of Heritage Hanmer Springs Resort townhouses. Near five-star restaurants and a variety of bars, one-bedroom apartments cost at least $140,000.

City of sails
The port of Auckland in the eastern part of the North Island is a real City of Sails, whose inhabitants feel their connection with the sea especially keenly. Due to the mild climate and a variety of outdoor activities, Auckland is an excellent choice for those who want to combine an idle pastime with profitable investments. At the same time, the cost of renting real estate here is higher than the national average, and the active growth of the population, which, according to analysts, will double by 2050, guarantees high liquidity to this sector of the market. Ray White Real Estate company offers for $120,000 stylish one-bedroom apartments in an elite complex in the center of Auckland. In addition to the balcony, from where the city is visible at a glance, an open-plan living room, a modern kitchen, a spacious bedroom, a reserved parking space is also offered.
Recently built ultramodern residential complex Proximity Apartments consists of 150 fully furnished apartments on 15 floors, cafes, restaurants and shops. The minimum price of apartments from Homes Abroad is $150,000.

On the islands
A three–hour drive north of Auckland, near 150 islands that have hardly been touched by civilization, there is one of the favorites of the New Zealand tourism industry - the Bay of Islands. The main hits of the local places, the resorts of Paihiya, Waitangi and the city of Russell, attract not only young vacationers, but also a lot of foreign investors, inspired by local beaches, rocky coves and opportunities that open up for diving.
The secondary housing market here is very lively and has a wide range of prices. Colorful towns like Karikari, with its agricultural fairs, cafes, craft shops and vineyards, are becoming increasingly popular among foreign buyers. Among the promising offers from Bayleys Real Estate is a classic two–bedroom villa on a 3-hectare plot near the Davz Bay Marina, a couple of minutes from Karikari. The building is in acceptable condition, but it still needs to be worked on, which is reflected in the initial price – $ 160,000. In the neighboring town of Paikhiya, in the famous tourist complex, Century 21 company is putting up for sale a cottage with a frame made of mast wood with one bedroom and a bathroom, the starting price of which is $ 100,000. Tax procedures related to the assignment of property rights require certain investments, but in this case it is better not to skimp, given that the resort has every chance to become a reliable source of income for future owners and landlords.

Investor's dream
The economy of the Otago region, located in the eastern part of the South Island, is one of the fastest growing in New Zealand. High demand for real estate, which is not subject to seasonal fluctuations, guarantees constant capital growth in this sector of the market. The city of Queenstown – the place chosen by Peter Jackson for the filming of "The Lord of the Rings" – is included in the list of luxury real estate. Active demand stimulates price growth and excellent rental income. Popular among fans of extreme sports, who are not afraid of even a considerable tax burden, Central Otago attracts foreigners, and they, whenever they come, will live here for four seasons, having tried everything – from bungee to downhill skiing. Potential buyers and tenants are also comfortable in the neighboring towns of Wanaka and Cromwell. The nearby towns of Dunedin and Invercargill will also enchant them.
In Dunedin, the oldest New Zealand city with magnificent architecture, real estate prices are kept in a very competitive range. So, LJ Hooker Agency offers a pair of well-equipped adjacent bungalows. with two bedrooms each, a garden and parking, for just $130,000.
A ready-to-move villa framed by a mast forest in nearby Caversham has been put up for sale by First National Dunedin for $150,000. The house has 4 bedrooms, a huge bathroom, an open-plan living room and a state-of-the-art kitchen.
The dream of a fan-skier is the village town of Huanaca, located on the shore of the lake and having beautiful views of the surrounding Southern Alps. There are five first-class ski resorts just an hour's drive from Ouanaki. Fisken and Associates presents an excellent Timsfield residential complex on the shores of Lake Javea, 12 km from Ouanaki. There are 23 houses of different designs in the village, with turnkey finishing on an individual order. And plots with an area of 800 sq . apartments near the beaches of Javea are sold for only $ 120,000.
And, finally, hermits who are looking for unspoilt corners of nature, it is difficult to resist offers from Stewart Island. Located an hour by train from the town of Bluff, south of Invercardiel, a protected island with footpaths in the wilderness and beaches of sugar-white sand is a paradise on earth for Greenpeace followers. Foreigners have not yet had time to properly experience this market – the more interesting it is to be one of the first to become the owner of local eco-cottages made of stone and mast wood or large secluded luxury properties. For the first time, plots for sale in a new low–density development zone with an area of 900 sq. m, on north-facing slopes, cost $160,000. Cheaper only for free - for a strip of paradise onislands of New Zealand…
