The cost of living in Croatia

The cost of living in Croatia cannot be called low: the prices here are average for Europe, which, however, does not prevent the country being a popular tourist destination; the picturesque Adriatic beaches, favorable climate, excellent cuisine, rich history and culture and relatively low housing prices make Croatia a country where foreigners love to acquire their "second homes".

Features of the budget

The national currency of Croatia is the Kuna (the international designation of currency – HRK), the course of which at the date of this writing amounted to little more than 8 rubles.

The most expensive city in Croatia is Dubrovnik, followed by Opatija, Split, Trogir and Zagreb. Most of the foreigners living in Zagreb and Dubrovnik. However, with the development of tourism more and more people come to Croatia to develop its business on the coast or in the small villages of the countryside. Of course, prices in the main tourist areas are different from less popular cities. Prices, especially in tourist season, up here 20%-40%.

If you compare the cost of living in the two capitals – Moscow and Zagreb, the life in the Russian capital costing almost 50% more expensive than in Croatian. So, under the condition of rental housing in both cities, to ensure the same level of comfort in Zagreb need sum 5170 kN ($758), and in Moscow – $1130.

Food prices

According to the international portal Numbeo, the cost of the basic food basket in Croatia is as follows:

  • Milk (1 l) – 6.18 of HRK (about 50 rubles).
  • Loaf of fresh white bread – 6,20 HRK (about 50 rubles).
  • Rice (1 kg) – HRK of 10.32 (82 rubles)
  • Eggs (12 PCs) – HRK 14,81 (115 RUB.)
  • Local cheese (1 kg) – HRK 54,77 (443 rbl.)
  • Chicken fillet (1 kg) – HRK 47,11 (385 rbl.)
  • Fruit (apples, oranges) – 9-10 HRK (around RUB 82)
  • Vegetables (tomatoes, potatoes) – HRK 5-10 (41-82 RUB)
  • Drinking bottled water (1.5 l) – HRK 6,08 (49 rbl.)
  • Bottle of wine HRK 35 (287 rubles.)
  • Local beer (0,5 l) – HRK at 6.92 (about 19 rbl.)
  • Imported beer (0,33 l) – HRK 9,41 (74 RUB)
  • A pack of cigarettes (Marlboro) – HRK 25 (205 rbl.)

The average score in an inexpensive restaurant – 60-100 HRK (491-815 rubles), and a three-course meal for two will cost 200 HRK (about 1640 RUR). A pint of local beer will cost HRK 13 (107 rubles), and 0.33 litre of imported beer – HRK 15 (123 rubles). Pizza or pasta at the caf
