An Austrian higher education diploma is a good start to a successful career, since the level of development of the Austrian economy is one of the highest among the EU countries. According to statistical studies, Vienna annually becomes the leader in terms of quality of life among cities around the world.
The most popular and demanded areas in Austrian higher education are, first of all, medicine - the competition here is very high, and the number of places is regulated by quotas. Also in the universities of the country are very popular: architecture, economics, computer science, IT, law, psychology and biology. If a person dreams of a creative profession, then Austria, as one of the most beautiful cultural capitals in the world, will also be an unmistakable choice.
Studying at universities in Germany also offers many perspectives. Exact sciences, IT technologies, engineering - specialists in these areas are in great demand on the German labor market. Education in Germany is considered free, but an administration fee is paid every semester. Due to the difference in the duration of schooling (in Germany they study for 13 years at school), in order to enter a German university, you first need to either unlearn a couple of years at a university in your homeland, or attend Studienkolleg courses in Germany, which specifically adapt future students to standards of German universities.
Austria or Germany?
The level of education in Austria does not differ much from the German one, moreover, there is now a tendency when many German citizens come to study in Austria, because in some specialties Austria offers a very high-quality education, the level of which is not inferior, and often even surpasses the German one. This applies primarily to medical and technical specialties.
Unlike Germany, you can enter Austrian universities immediately after leaving school. If the level of the language is not high enough, then you can attend special preparatory language courses (Vorstudienlehrgang) before the start of the basic training. True, every year the rules for admission to European universities are becoming stricter, therefore, since 2019, there have been significant changes in university legislation in Austria.
University admission conditions
Starting in the summer semester 2019, knowledge of German at the A2 level, confirmed by the corresponding certificate, has become a mandatory requirement for university enrollment and study at the Vorstudienlehrgang accredited preparatory language courses in Austria.
For admission to regular education at universities, a language certificate with a C1 level is now required. Accredited university preparatory language courses cost 1200 euros per semester, and students can receive discounts if they perform well.
Previously, admission to Austrian universities was carried out without entrance examinations (with the exception of some faculties), but now, in accordance with the new legislation, universities can introduce entrance examinations in relation to a more expanded list of areas of study. For Austrians, a Matura certificate is required for admission to university, which is obtained upon completion of their studies at the gymnasium.
Cost of education
Foreigners are entitled to conditionally free higher education in Austria if they have a certain set of knowledge and are tested, as well as confirm their language proficiency at a level not lower than B2. With this level, you can try to enter universities on an equal basis with local students, paying only the student fee, which is 740 euros per term for foreigners.
If we talk about paid education, then the range of prices, as elsewhere, is quite large, but on average it is at least 10,000 euros per year - the price varies depending on the university and the direction of study. In the higher vocational schools of applied sciences (Fachhochschule), the tuition fee is about 365 euros per semester.
Pre-university education in Austria
The school system in Austria is quite complex and ramified. You won't have to pay much for studying in a regular school, but international and private schools are much more expensive - from 4,000 to 20,000 euros per year. At the same time, the quality of pre-university education in Austria is of a good level. There are specialized gymnasiums here, for example, with a medical and biological profile and others, after which it is much easier to enter the corresponding university.
Technical schools are also widespread, which provide very strong training, but it is quite difficult to enter and study in such a school, since children will have difficult entrance tests, high competition, and constant screening during their studies. For example, out of three grades in grade 5 by the end of the course, only one remains, because most students drop out.
Real estate and the opportunity to study in Austria
Even the presence of rented real estate allows you to arrange a child in a kindergarten or school, but subject to a residence permit. It is possible that a question may arise with the availability of places, but if the child is registered, then the local authorities are obliged to accept the child in an educational institution. You can choose from municipal institutions, conditionally free, or private school kindergartens, the price of which is usually 200-300 euros per month. This amount is considered small by local standards, since the city subsidizes kindergartens.
A prerequisite for purchasing real estate is the presence of a European (including Austrian) residence permit. If a foreigner issues a residence permit in Austria not only for himself, but also for small members of his family, then it is important to know about one more important fact: Austrian law prescribes compulsory school attendance for children aged 6-14 years old and this is strictly controlled by special educational services ...
