In the period from 2018 to 2022, a total of 651,495 people from 169 countries received German citizenship, according to the Statista report. This is twice as much as in the previous five-year period.
Most of the new citizens arrived in Germany from Turkey, Syria and the UK. The top ten also included Romanians, Poles, Italians, Iraqis, Iranians, Kosovars and Ukrainians.
According to data for 2019, about 16% of the German population are non-indigenous residents. Their share may still grow, given that the country's authorities have recently relaxed immigration laws. In particular, foreigners were allowed to have dual citizenship: their original and German. Another change is that a passport can now be obtained after 5 years of residence in the territory of the state, and not 8 years as before.
