The last obstacles to the accession of Bulgaria and Romania to the Schengen by land have been overcome, writes SchengenNews.
Romania will enter the Schengen area by land borders on January 1, 2025, Romanian Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu said. Romania and Bulgaria became part of the Schengen Area by air and sea on March 31, 2024, as Austria opposed full accession due to concerns about illegal migration. However, today Austria has finally agreed to lift its veto on Romania and Bulgaria's membership in the EU visa-free zone.
The EU Commissioner for Internal Affairs, Ylva Johansson, said that a vote on this issue could take place on December 12-13.
