Bulgaria has made significant progress in meeting the requirements for inclusion in the visa-free entry program to the United States, said Acting Foreign Minister Ivan Kondov.

To participate in this program, the refusal rate for issuing tourist visas to Bulgarian citizens must be below 3%.

According to data provided by the U.S. Department of State on November 27, 2024, the rate of visa refusals to Bulgarian citizens in 2024 was 6.02%, which is a significant improvement from 11.61% in fiscal year 2023.

Kondov stressed that Sofia can reach the required threshold of refusals in fiscal year 2025.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has launched an information campaign aimed at educating Bulgarians about various types of tourist visas to the United States. Maria Bakalova, an Oscar nominee in 2021, became the face of the campaign launched under the slogan "You don't need an Oscar" to get a visa to the United States.

Participation in the visa waiver program in the United States means that Bulgarian citizens will be able to enter the United States without a visa for tourist or business purposes for up to 90 days.

Romania has already become a member of the visa-free entry program to the United States. Starting March 31, 2025, Romanians will be able to enter the United States without a visa for a short period of time.
