Now it will be impossible to obtain a Czech passport without renouncing Russian citizenship. The relevant law was signed by Czech President Peter Pavel on February 6, 2025.

Applicants for Czech citizenship will need to provide proof of renunciation of Russian citizenship.

However, there are categories of people for whom exceptions have been made. These include children under the age of 15, asylum seekers and those who have special merits for the Czech Republic.

The law will not affect Russians who already have Czech passports.

The Czech opposition has previously stated that it intends to challenge this measure in the Constitutional Court.
