Since 2025, the authorities of Dubrovnik have been introducing a special traffic zone in the UNESCO-listed Old Town. The admission of cars to this area will be regulated using a special mobile application. It is expected that the number of taxis allowed in the Old City will decrease from 9,000 to 700.
"All residents will be allowed to move around the area, but cars with [foreign license plates], such as rented cars and taxis, other vehicles, will not be allowed into the restricted traffic area," said Jelka Tepsic, deputy Mayor for Tourism.
To pass through this area, tourist buses will need to book seats in advance through the app.
The authorities also plan to build a parking lot "Park and Ride" in the suburbs. Visitors will be able to park their cars there and get to the center by public transport.
The measures taken are part of a large-scale strategic plan "Respect the City", the implementation of which was launched in 2017. The aim of this initiative is to restore a balance between the growth of tourism and the quality of life of the local population.
Restrictions do not stop tourists.Since the beginning of 2024, the city has been visited by more than 3 million guests, which is 10% more than last year.
