The European Union plans to suspend the issuance of multiple-entry Schengen visas to almost all Russian citizens, writes SchengenNews with reference to POLITICO.

Thus, Russian applicants are expected to receive only single-entry visas, although exceptions may be made in exceptional cases for humanitarian reasons.

This will not affect Russians with dual citizenship who also have EU citizenship.

However, the day before, the French Embassy denied the information about the termination of issuing multivisa visas to Russians, assuring that the country's visa policy would remain the same, RBC reports

A single-entry visa gives a foreigner the right to visit the Schengen area once as part of a specific trip. However, if he wants to re-enter the Schengen area, he will need to apply for another visa.

In 2025, 552,629 Schengen visas were issued to Russian citizens.Although this figure is slightly higher than in the previous year (459,198), it is significantly lower than in 2019 (4 million visas).

Italy provided the most visas to Russians in 2024 152 254 visas. France (123,890 visas) and Spain (111,537 visas) are in second and third place.Compared to other EU states, Hungary, France, Spain and Italy have the most liberal visa policies.
