Croatian Finance Minister Marko Primorac has confirmed that the country will start collecting property taxes. It is planned to implement it by converting the existing tax on resort housing.

The new tax will cover all apartments and houses in which the owners do not actually live and do not rent them out on a long-term basis. The main motive for this initiative was the information that about 600,000 properties throughout the Republic of Croatia are empty.

The goal is to expand the range of properties that will be taxed, change the rates and introduce a scale of taxation of such real estate. We will instruct local governments to introduce this tax in accordance with our goal to shift the tax burden from labor to property," said Primorac.

The minister has not yet wished to disclose specific figures. By the end of this week, the authorities plan to make an announcement explaining all the details.

An industry representative interviewed by Croatia Week does not believe that after the introduction of the tax, so many new offers will enter the market that it will lead to a significant price change.
