The Italian authorities are considering a bill providing for the accelerated eviction of non-paying tenants.

The essence of the proposal is to create a new government agency independent of the courts, which will be able to evict a tenant who has been overdue for two months or more within 10 days.

The law will protect the interests of owners who have been waiting for months, and sometimes even years, to regain the property occupied by the tenant.

However, according to many, this measure will not solve the problem: the courts are understaffed, there is insufficient municipal housing, and rents are constantly rising.

In Italy, more than a million families live in extreme poverty and pay rent. "This is a structural problem that is further exacerbated by the lack of any housing support measures..."That's right," says Silvia Paoluzzi from the Tenants' Union. In this context, any authority with super-powers for rapid evictions will have to face other legislative checks and balances.

For several months now, a security law has been in force in Italy, which provides for a penalty of two to seven years in prison for anyone who, "through violence or threats, occupies or holds without ownership property intended for another person's residence," or "prevents the return of the owner or the person lawfully owning it.""or who "appropriated property intended for another person's residence."
