On Sunday, thousands of Canarians protested against mass tourism in their region. They called on the authorities to limit the number of tourists in order to protect local residents from a sharp rise in housing prices, traffic jams and congestion of municipal services.
Taking to the streets under the slogan "The Canary Islands have a limit", the demonstrators marched across all the main islands of the archipelago and in several cities of mainland Spain.
According to official data, more than 1 million foreign tourists visit the Canary Islands every month, while the local population is 2.2 million people.
Spain received a record number of tourists in 2024, and more visitors are expected this year.Earlier, protests against excessive tourism took place in other cities, including Mallorca, Barcelona and Malaga.
