Cyprus President Nicos Christodoulides expressed hope that his country will join the Schengen area in 2026.
"We will join the Schengen area in 2026.By the end of 2025, we will make tremendous efforts from a technical point of view."This is our goal, we will complete everything we need to do as a state so that the Republic of Cyprus joins the Schengen area in 2026," Christodoulides said. In his opinion, membership in the Schengen area will contribute, in particular, to the development of tourism, which is important for the country's economy.EU Commissioner for Internal Affairs Magnus Brunner recently stated that the European Commission is closely monitoring Cyprus' progress in meeting the requirements for joining the Schengen area.
Cyprus has been a part of the European Union since 2004.
It should be noted that plans to join Schengen are likely to lead to a tightening or cancellation of the popular Cyprus residence permit program for real estate investments. Today, participation in the scheme requires the purchase of a new residential or commercial facility in the amount of 300,000 euros plus VAT.An investment residence permit opens a fast path to permanent residence, which takes from six months to a year.
