In his opinion, membership in the Schengen area will contribute, in particular, to the development of tourism, which is important for the country's economy.EU Commissioner for Internal Affairs Magnus Brunner recently stated that the European Commission is closely monitoring Cyprus' progress in meeting the requirements for joining the Schengen area.
Cyprus has been a part of the European Union since 2004.
