Foreign investors in the 1st quarter of 2023 submitted as many applications for a "golden visa" as for the whole of 2021 and almost four times more than in January-March 2022.
The high demand is associated with several factors. First of all, due to the fact that the Greek government in September 2022 announced plans to double the minimum investment threshold for participation in the program in 36 key municipalities to 500,000 euros. This news caused a flurry of new applications. Last month, the country's authorities reported that the transition period from the old to the new scheme extended. This gives a chance to thousands of applicants to apply for a golden visa on the same terms.
The boom of those wishing to obtain the status of a resident of Greece through investments led to the fact that the regional authorities were not ready to accept such a large number of applications.
