Madrid Mayor Jose Luis Martinez-Almeida has announced that he will present a special plan to protect residential areas of the Spanish capital from tourist expansion.
What measures will be included in this plan?
- It will be prohibited to rent accommodation to tourists located in the historical center of the city.
- It will be possible to convert private buildings in the center of Madrid into residential premises with an increase in their area, provided that they are designed for affordable housing.
- It will be prohibited to convert commercial premises into tourist facilities. The goal is to preserve the identity of the districts and support small and medium-sized businesses.
"The government is committed to improving access to housing for Madrid residents and solving the problem of illegal tourist accommodation," Almeida said.
Several cities in Spain, including Barcelona, limit short-term rental housing in historical areas under the pressure of local residents.
