According to the latest data from the municipal register, 1,718,149 people were registered in the city as of September 1 last year.
Despite the fact that several thousand Barcelona residents have left the city due to housing prices, many foreigners, on the contrary, have moved to the Catalan capital. The influx of population is also facilitated by the development of new areas in such locations as Marina del Prat Vermelle, the vicinity of Sagrera station.
In one year, the number of registered residents of Barcelona increased by 17,254 people.Barcelona, like many other municipalities, experienced a population decline during the pandemic (2020-2021). In the following years, she more than recovered, returning to the dynamics of the pre-war period.
Although detailed data for the entire year 2024 has not yet been received, it is obvious that the influx of immigrants has compensated for the natural population decline associated with a steadily declining birth rate. Thus, this is the sixth year in a row when the number of registered residents of Barcelona who were not born in this city will be higher than the number of people born in the Catalan capital. In addition, in 2023, the group of residents born abroad exceeded the 30% threshold for the first time in history. Currently, one in three Barcelona residents was born outside Spain, regardless of whether they have Spanish citizenship or not.
