Stricter requirements will be imposed on foreign citizens wishing to obtain French citizenship, Interior Minister Bruno Retello said.
From January 1, 2026, to obtain French citizenship by naturalization, you will need to speak French at the B2 level, not B1, as it is now. The new conditions are fixed in the Immigration Law, adopted in 2024.
Last year, almost 67,000 people obtained French citizenship, including about 49,000 as a result of naturalization.
In 2023, the largest number of immigrants were from the Maghreb countries (Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia and Libya), Russia and the United Kingdom.Source: The Connexion
