The Constitutional Court of Italy last week approved a referendum on reducing the period of compulsory residence in the country before obtaining citizenship. Now this period is 10 years, it is proposed to reduce it to 5 years. The changes, if adopted, will affect foreigners from non-EU countries.
The countries of the European Union where immigrants can obtain a passport in 5 or even less years: France, Germany, Portugal, Belgium, Sweden.
It is noted that the reform will reduce the waiting time before applying for citizenship, but other requirements, such as knowledge of the Italian language, will remain the same. The decision on granting citizenship to a foreigner remains with the State authorities.
