Starting from January 1, 2025, highly qualified foreign workers will be able to receive a Swedish EU Blue Card under less stringent conditions, SchengenNews reports.

What are the changes?

  • The salary threshold will be lowered from 1.5 to 1.25 of the average annual gross salary.
  • Specialists will now have the opportunity to switch to other highly qualified jobs without having to apply for a new EU Blue Card, simply by notifying the Migration Agency about the new job.
  • The required duration of the employment contract will be reduced from one year to six months.
  • Foreigners who have the right to switch from other types of residence permits to an EU Blue Card will be able to do so without leaving the country.
  • Highly qualified employees who have had an EU Blue Card issued by another country in the last 12 months will be able to apply for an EU Blue Card in Sweden using a somewhat simplified procedure.
  • The processing time for the Swedish EU Blue Card application has already been reduced from 90 to 30 days.
The Swedish authorities have made it clear that they want to make the country more attractive to foreign highly skilled workers and retain talent on their territory.
