Sweden wants to increase the length of residence in the country for applicants for citizenship from 5 to 8 years. In addition, the authorities plan to introduce a language and cultural proficiency exam for those wishing to obtain a passport, as well as financial solvency requirements.
Details have not yet been made public, but it is already known that the tests will be held in digital format and will become mandatory for foreigners from 16 to 65 years old.
Swedish Migration Minister Maria Malmer Stenergaard said that the current conditions need to be tightened so that foreigners are more motivated to integrate into society, reports Schengen.News.
The Government's proposal will still be discussed. If approved, the new rules for obtaining citizenship are expected to come into force on January 1, 2025.
