Germany received the most new citizens - 288,700 people (24.5% of the total), Spain - 252,500 (21.4%) and Italy - 217,400 (18.5%). The vast majority of those who have obtained citizenship (88%) are from non-EU countries, and only 10.6% are citizens of other EU states.
Syrians (110,100 new passports), Moroccans (97,100) and Albanians (48,000) are the leaders among the nationalities. According to Eurostat, about 31,000 Russians became EU citizens in 2024. Most often they chose Germany, France, Spain and Finland.
The naturalization rate (the number of people who have obtained citizenship per 100 foreign residents) is highest in Sweden - 7.5. Followed by Italy (4.1), Spain and the Netherlands (3.9 each). The lowest rates are in Lithuania (0.1), Bulgaria and Estonia (0.3 each).
