The Bundestag approved amendments to the Law on Asylum and Naturalization, allowing immigrants to have a second citizenship.
Voting on them was postponed twice due to the position of the FDP (Free Democratic Party), but by the end of last year the differences between the coalition parties were settled.
What are the changes?
- Immigrants (subject to certain conditions) will be able to obtain a German passport after only 5 years of residence in the country, and not after 8, as now.
- Immigrants are given the right to retain their original citizenship (previously it applied only to EU citizens).
- Some foreigners who have achievements in work, studies or volunteering, know German perfectly well, will be able to obtain citizenship within 3 years after moving.
The new law is expected to come into force in April 2024.
