Tourists booking apartments through short-term rental platforms such as Airbnb or Booking will now not be able to move into rented accommodation in the absence of the owner. The Italian government introduced a ban on self-driving in November 2024.
Previously, the owners of apartments for rent left the keys to the guests in the safe located in the entrance. This simplified the interaction for both sides. Now the check-in will take place only at a personal meeting.
According to the initiators of the bill, when self-checking in, there is a risk that the apartment will be occupied by persons whose identities remain unknown to the relevant police authorities, which poses a potential danger to society.
Residents of major tourist centers such as Rome, Florence and Milan are protesting against short-term rentals, as they provoke an increase in rental rates.Source: 34 travel
