According to government estimates, 98,000 foreigners came to Switzerland in 2023. Mostly to find a job (54%), reunite with family (26%), get an education (10%) or apply for asylum (5%). Net migration in this Alpine country has reached a record level since 2008.
Of those who got a job in Switzerland, almost 40% took positions in the information technology and hospitality sectors. Expats were also in high demand in healthcare, pharmacy and education. Many analysts believe that the reason for the growing migration is that the country is experiencing a chronic shortage of labor.
