Mayor of London Boris Johnson announced the approval of the General development plan of East London – from London bridge to Dog island and the Greenwich Peninsula, via Ilford in Essex and Dartford in Kent. Johnson said that the project aims to unite a number of large developers who have already engaged in new projects in the capital – the so-called "Zone of Opportunities" (eng. Opportunity Areas), which use urban land for the construction of the promising housing, commercial spaces and other infrastructure.
In 2004, the office of the London mayor announced that the city has the potential for the construction of 52 000 new objects, but after more detailed calculations and modeling, this figure had risen to 203 500 homes – including those that are 13 "Areas of opportunity" and can be built in the next 20 years.
In many ways, the ambitious residential project is made possible with the participation of the Fund of Transport for London's Growth, which focuses on improving the city's transport system and connects the previously hard to reach for each other the areas, building new interchanges, metro line, etc. Alex Williams, Director of planning Fund, says that thanks to new projects in the next 15 years the population of East London could increase by 600 000 people.
And the mayor of London promises to "complement" the existing 94 000 budget object of another 100,000 houses. For the fiscal year in the British capital was erected as early as 18 000 such objects – the largest number since 1981.
