Voting for this law has already been delayed twice. However, as reported by SchengenVisaInfo.com , the differences are settled. As I Am Expat Germany explains, the agreement reached between the coalition parties means that the law will now pass a second reading. There will be one more reading, and after the third there will be a vote.
If the law is passed in January, it will most likely come into force in April 2024.
As soon as this happens, foreign citizens legally residing in Germany will be able to retain their original citizenship, as well as obtain German citizenship without giving up their ancestral one. However, in some regions of the country, the processing time for an application for German citizenship can be several years, meaning some applicants will need time to obtain a German passport.
Accelerated obtaining of a German passport, after 3 years of legal residence, will be available to foreigners who have mastered the German language well and have achieved great success in their work or volunteer activities.
