Foreigners applying for a long-term residence permit in Hungary will have to take an exam on Hungarian culture. The new requirement came into force on January 1, 2025 as part of amendments to immigration laws.

The country's authorities emphasize the importance of cultural integration for citizens of other countries moving to Hungary.

The exam covers 6 key topics:

  • National symbols and holidays of Hungary
  • Important events in the history of Hungary
  • Prominent figures of European and Hungarian literature and music
  • Fundamental institutions
  • Basic rights and duties of a citizen
  • Europe and Hungary in everyday life

Candidates will be assessed based on the results of a written test in Hungarian, consisting of 12 questions: 2 questions for each of the six topics.Candidates are given up to 3 attempts, and after the third unsuccessful attempt they will not be able to take the test again.

Registration for the exam is handled by the Budapest Government. Detailed information, including preparatory materials, is available on their official website.
