The Catalan government will amend the decree on the emergency legalization of migrants proposed by the Spanish government, according to which knowledge of the Catalan language will be taken into account when first extending a residence permit.
According to the proposal, legalized migrants will have one year to study the official languages of various autonomous communities.
The Minister of Language Policy, Francesc Xavier Vila, explained that when extending a residence permit one year after legalization, the fact of starting language learning will be important. In his opinion, this can be confirmed by providing evidence, either by taking courses organized by the Catalan government, or by learning the language yourself.
"We want to emphasize that learning the language is a real integration tool," Vila emphasized, adding that the government is committed to providing resources so that everyone can learn Catalan."
