A bit of history:
The fertile land between the mountains Kalimaro, Curatolo, Rosello, Gada, La Destra, Chiagola, Le Fabbrish, Skiena, crossed by a small river, has been inhabited and cultivated since prehistoric times. During the times of Enotri (VI-V century BC) and Lucani (V-IV century BC) agricultural villas were located here, which built the first fortification on Mount Kalimaro to protect the territory from the Greeks. Turia, coming from the Mercury-Lao Valley through the Piani del Carro di Tortora. Subsequently, Roman agricultural production flourished on this land. The Byzantines, who succeeded the Romans, made it the capital of the Turma, renewing and strengthening the fortification of Mount Kalimaro to protect themselves from the invasions of the Goths and Lombards from Laino through Piani del Carro, and gave the settlement its current name: Aieta (like an eagle on the top of a mountain ). In the Byzantine period, numerous Greco-Byzantine monks from the East lived in this place, fleeing the invasions of Palestine and Egypt, first by the Sassanids of Khosrov, and then by the Muslims. This is evidenced by the place names of saints from different areas of Ayetan. After the Norman conquest, the position of Monte Calimaro became useless and abandoned as there were no more enemies to fear. Thus, the town, built on a ridge overlooking the Tortora Valley to the northwest and the inner basin to the southeast, was expanded and populated. Since then, the small town has gone through the vicissitudes characteristic of other Tyrrhenian centers, united with the Neapolitan possessions of the Swabians, Angevins, Aragonese, foreign possessions, the Neapolitan kingdom of the Bourbons from Charles III to the accession to the Kingdom of Italy. , with the only interruption of French rule during the sad Napoleonic period in the first decade of the 19th century. After the creation of the municipality of Praia a Mare in 1928, the territory of Ayeta was reduced, deprived of the coastal strip.
